Mihalopoulos, 2022A SpringerBrief in Child Health, “Providing Affirming Care to Transgender and Gender-Diverse Youth” discusses current practice and policy; emerging science and best practices related to cutting edge work in the field; and anticipated changes, recommendations, and strategies to achieve the best healthcare for transgender and gender-diverse children and their families. In 2018, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) published a policy statement entitled, “Ensuring Comprehensive Care and Support for Transgender and Gender Diverse Children and Adolescents,” which recognized that pediatric providers often have an essen- tial role in assisting youth and families with gender concerns and in providing evidence-based information related to health and healthcare decisions (Rafferty et al. 2018). What we know, as stated in a healthychildren.org discussion of the AAP’s gender-related policy statement, is that while transgender and gender- diverse children may face a number of challenges, they, like all children and youth, do best when they are supported and loved by those around them as they develop and grow into adulthood (AAP 2018). While being supportive of children and youth as they grow and develop may seem like common sense, all too often this caring approach to children and youth dealing with gender-related issues is not always present in their community environment.
