By Jonathan Ames, 2005Transsexuals, seemingly as a rite of passage, undergo various levels of persecution and torment from the outside world—it is well established that people will attack what they don’t understand, what scares them. And why are people scared of transsexuals? Because transsexuals shake up the order of things? Because they present people with an option that maybe they don’t want to contemplate—that you can change who you are? But can you? I’m not going to answer such a question here—I couldn’t anyway—but I do think the texts I’ve gathered here will force readers to contemplate the riddle of identity and self, because though the transsexual’s quest is seemingly for their correct gender, it’s also a journey to answer questions that haunt all people: Who am I? What am I?
