Sophie, a young religious French woman, is determined to learn and apply the ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity to her everyday life after her friend Celeste joins The Society. Her other friend, Maxi, is hesitant yet supportive of her new journey and association with The Society. However, her parents, Louis and Anne, oppose Sophie’s journey to freedom. Louis, an old chamberlain, is determined to uphold the values of the world that are quickly falling around him and knows that he must not lose his daughter to the ideals of this new revolution. Anne, a housewife, only wants her daughter to be happy and free from the curse of being a wife. However, she knows she must follow the direction of Louis or face punishment. This story, inspired by the real-life events of a transgender woman, centers on themes of change, religion, and rejection. The latter outlines the play throughout as Sophie searches for one thing from her parents: sympathy.
